This tour will give you a chance to explore most common and ancient caves found in Zanzibar. These caves are part of ancient history of the Zanzibar Island. The locals would visit the caves to worship their ancestors, bringing gifts to the holy stones. The stalagmites and stalactites have formed from water dissolving calcium carbonate from coral stones. The use of flashlights (torches) is necessary as the caves extend deep into the rock; however, some of them naturally formed holes in the ceiling of the caves which let sunlight in, creating an exciting atmosphere.
At some caves you will see artefacts from the cave and a timeline of Swahili history going back to the beginning of our story as humans originating in East Africa. You will walk across a small bridge and a few steps to the base of the well-lit cave to find a large pool formed by a subterranean river. The area is a wildlife sanctuary for dozens of monkeys, birds, butterflies and bushbabies. The caves that you will have a chance to insight upon our agreement are: Kuza Cave, Kiwengwa Cave, Mangwapwani Cave, Tazari Cave and others.
